CATs, a family of three distinct mammalian cationic amino acid transporters

Three related mammalian carrier proteins that mediate the transport of cationic amino acids through the plasma membrane have been identified in murine and human cells (CAT for cationic amino acid transporter). Models of the CAT proteins in the membrane suggest they have 12 or 14 transmembrane domains connected by short hydrophilic loops and intracellular N- and C-termini. The transport activity of the CAT proteins is sensitive to trans-stimulation and independent of the presence of sodium ions. Factors influencing the transport of tryptophan hydrochloride through supported liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers

Commercially available PTFE membranes were used as a support for liquid membranes in amino acid transport. Using tryptophan as a model amino acid, the influence of the type of organic liquid, kind of macrocyclic carrier and counter-ion on transport efficiency was examined. These studies show the strong influence of the kind of the counter-ion co-transported with amino acid cation, and the type of macrocyclic carrier used on the transport efficiency. The transport efficiency depends also on the pH of the source phase and on the nature of the organic liquid used as a membrane solvent. Role of geometry and anisotropic diffusion for modelling PO2 profiles in working red muscle

A 3-dimensional analytical model of O2 diffusion in heavily working muscle is proposed which considers anisotropic, myoglobin (Mb)-facilitated O2 diffusion inside the muscle fiber and a carrier-free layer separating erythrocytes and fiber. The model is used to study the effects of some commonly applied simplifying assumptions (reduced dimensionality, neglected anisotropy) on the resulting PO2 distributions: (1) In order not to underestimate PO2 drops near erythrocytes, modelling O2 transport in 3 dimensions is important. Brain lateralization probed by water diffusion at the atomic to micrometric scale

International audience; Combined neutron scattering and diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have been used to reveal significant interregional asymmetries (lateralization) in bovine brain hemispheres in terms of myelin arrangement and water dynamics at micron to atomic scales. Thicker myelin sheaths were found in the left hemisphere using neutron diffraction. 4.7 T dMRI and quasi-elastic neutron experiments highlighted significant differences in the properties of water dynamics in the two hemispheres. Abstract Dipeptide and phosphono dipeptide hydrochlorides permeated well through a 1-decanol membrane supported in a porous polyethylene hollow fiber matrix. This transfer is easily accomplished either by passive or by carrier-facilitated (with Kryptofixes 222 or 5 present in the membrane phase) transport. The transport is stereoselective with l-l dipeptides being transported faster than their l-d isomers.
Bidirectional membrane transport: Simulations of transport inhibition in uptake studies explain data obtained with flavonoids

The purpose of the simulations was to obtain an estimate of concentration-dependent uptake curves when two counteracting transporters are present. On the basis of this experimental data obtained with a pair of ovarian carcinoma cell lines, one of which was not expressing the exsorptive transporter P-glycoprotein and one of which was an MDR1-transfected, P-glycoprotein expressing variant, the kinetics of cellular uptake of the radiolabel (3)H-talinolol were calculated and the inhibitory constants at P-gp were determined for different flavonoids.
